I had known about the other, more iconic and photogenic, location of the Letras de Mazatlán. That one is located much further north along the Malecón, in an oceanfront plaza along with the Monumento a la Familia. If your time in port is short, a terrific alternative is the Estero del Yugo Nature Preserve. Conveniently located by the popular Mazagua Water Park, the 27 acres of protected land is rich with flora and fauna of the region. Then, for a visual experience of culture, visit the Museo de Arte which opened in 1998.

The famous Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Angela Peralta Theater are located in El Centro. Zona Dorada, or Golden Zone, is the primary tourist district and is located along the beachfront. This area is filled with all-inclusive resorts, restaurants, and shops catering to tourists.

The golf cart taxis called Pulmonias are plenty here and are the preferred means of transport. This is where you can take up parasailing, banana boat rides, kayaking and plenty of other water activities. Take a relaxing boat ride along the river, learning about the local flora and fauna of the place. Walk on wooden boardwalks that jut out to the water and enjoy observing the nature around you. The first thing you are likely to notice as your ship leaves the Pacific Ocean and enters the Canal de Navigación is El Faro – Spanish for “the lighthouse.” Look left!

Let’s say you wanted to to from the cruise port to Plaza Machado located in Centro, it would be approximately a 1km or 15-minute walk. The road is flat and there are sidewalks, so the walk itself is not difficult or strenuous. Mazatlán is a HUB for cosmetic medical tourism because the products are equal quality to the states, but the cost is much less. You can literally see the entire city, plus the Sierra Madre mountains in the background, and even your cruise ship back in the harbour.
The second is about mid-way up the malecon, just after centro, in the Playa Norte/Reforma area of town. This one is across the street from the malecon, tucked in a little park area, but still makes for a fab photo. You can also learn about traditional Mexican culture by visiting one of Copala’s churches or taking a cooking class. The Mazatlan Museum of Art is located in the heart of the city just one block from the Malecon in the Mazatlan Centro Historico building. It features a variety of art from local, national and international sources.
I know you don’t need a hotel, as you have to get back to the ship, but this is a stop you shouldn’t miss. The Posada Freeman Hotel (now owned by Best Western) is a landmark building in Mazatlán built back in 1944. It was actually the first ‘high-rise’ in all of north western Mexico. Practice the normal safety precautions that you would in any city worldwide, including keeping an eye on your belongings, and not flashing around expensive jewelry. I have friends that have relocated here from the United States and Canada, young children in tow, to give them a better quality of life and sense of culture. Hmm- how can I put this lightly…the media tends to over-exaggerate things to fuel its own agenda.
